Thanks to Maria Montessori for her insights about learning!

Education is a noble endeavor; over emphasis on standardized test scores minimizes potential.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes about education:

0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";} h2 {mso-style-link:"Heading 2 Char"; mso-style-next:Normal; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; page-break-after:avoid; mso-outline-level:2; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; font-weight:normal; font-style:italic;} span.Heading2Char {mso-style-name:"Heading 2 Char"; mso-style-locked:yes; mso-style-link:"Heading 2"; mso-ansi-font-size:12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt; font-style:italic;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} -->

The word education must not be understood as teaching but of assisting the psychological development of the child.  It should no longer be thought of as imparting knowledge, but must take a new path that seeks to release the human potential within us all.  Education is not something, which a teacher does.  It is a natural development which develops spontaneously.  The true role of education is to interest the child profoundly in an external activity to which he will give all his potential.

Perhaps we can remind ourselves of Maria Montessori’s overall vision of the function of education-a vision both vast and exceedingly simple; that we work together towards the liberation of each individual, that we help one another-whatever our age or role-to discover and be ourselves, contributing what we each have to offer to the peace and harmony of the whole.

Education for Peace

Whatever education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your road map through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die.
